Art 1A – First semester is dedicated to learning basic skills for creating art. The curriculum is based on the elements of art and aesthetics throughout art history. Beginning projects will focus on improving drawing, painting, and sculpture skills in a variety of media including pencil, colored pencil and paints.
Art 1B – Second semester will include artwork in paper mache, acrylic, watercolor, pastel drawing, and other media. Students are expected to produce artwork with a higher level of craftsmanship in hopes of advancing into Drawing & Painting and/or Ceramics & Sculpture classes.

Continued emphasis is given to the development of musicianship and basic skills through a large repertoire of appropriate level band literature. This group prepares band students for instrumental music and for entering the wind ensemble. This performance-based class will include; Concert and Pep band music. The group is required to perform throughout the year for various community activities, for school functions (Example: Pep assemblies, and Basketball Games), and Program Performances (Examples: Christmas Concert, Concert Festival, and the Spring Concert). Public and out of school performances are a requirement of the course. Attendance is required for all concerts, out of school performances, and basketball games.

Beginning guitar is for any student that wishes to learn the basics of guitar. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn and the ability to suffer from some sore fingertips! The course will cover reading chords, notes, strumming and correct fingering while learning to play numerous songs out of the beginning guitar book which your fee will cover. In class, students can learn at an individual pace to attain goals that will be set by the instructor while playing in a group setting.

Each section is led by a seasoned upperclassman that assists Mr. Child in the teaching and modeling of behavior and vocal health. Freshman will have the opportunity to sing challenging and fun music from a wide variety of genres. During this time, they will also learn vocal skills and techniques that will enable them to be successful singers throughout the rest of their high school careers. No audition is required, only a commitment and desire to learn and be challenged every single day. There is no set fee for the choir, however, choir members will perform in uniform choir shirts for all formal concerts throughout the year. Choir members will have the opportunity to fundraise to cover this cost, or they may simply pay for the shirt. Costs for the shirt will not exceed $10. There will be other educational opportunities throughout the year in which choir members may wish to participate. Fees for these events will be announced well in advance and will be voluntary.

Public performances will be required during the school year. These include: school concerts, district festivals, and a spring tour. Singing in the Nordic Choir can be a preparation to audition for Madrigals, FX Show Choir, Anima Mea, or to gain appreciation for music that will last throughout your life. madrigal singers a-b (0824 and 0825)

Prerequisite: One-year high school choir experience, audition and instructor’s signature required on registration form
The Madrigals are a mixed group of elite singers. There will be 24 singers, ideally with six on a part. Individual and large group auditions will be held to determine who will be an accepted participant. Attitude, tone, pitch matching, commitment to the group, as well as piano experience and sight singing will be considered during the audition. Members will be strong individual singers as well have the ability to blend well with others. Students will be required to keep a music journal of topics and concepts discussed. These topics of theory and history will be more advanced and in depth. Tests on sight singing, theory, and history can be expected. Madrigals will focus on literature that is four to eight parts and in various genres of history and languages. In addition, singers will be required to try out for the Treasure Valley Honor Meet and participate in the District III Solo and Ensemble Festival. The Madrigals are a mixed group of elite singers. There will be 24 singers, ideally with six on a part. Individual and large group auditions will be held to determine who will be an accepted participant. Attitude, tone, pitch matching, commitment to the group, as well as piano experience and sight singing will be considered during the audition. Members will be strong individual singers as well have the ability to blend well with others. Students will be required to keep a music journal of topics and concepts discussed. These topics of theory and history will be more advanced and in depth. Tests on sight singing, theory, and history can be expected. Madrigals will focus on literature that is four to eight parts and in various genres of history and languages. In addition, singers will be required to try out for the Treasure Valley Honor Meet and participate in the District III Solo and Ensemble Festival. The FX Show Choir is a class designed to mix aspects of singing and dancing. Various styles of dance will be learned to accompany the vocal music. During auditions, equal weight will be given to both dancing and singing abilities. Attitude, energy level, ability to work with others, and musicianship is considered before admittance into the group is allowed. The group will be limited to 24-30 participants depending on voicing and the male/female ratio. The show choir meets for “early bird” (zero hour) Monday through Thursday. Where every part and singer is choreographed, every rehearsal’s attendance is very important. The main focus throughout the year will be on the spring productions. A smaller performance will be at Christmas time held jointly with the other choirs.

This course is an introductory course that lays the foundation for the rest of the theatre program. Students in this course will experience the basics of acting, theatre etiquette, theatre vocabulary, journal writing, theatre history, technical theatre, playwriting, pantomime, and more. Grades and conduct in this course, as well as a formal audition, will be required for acceptance into Theatre 2.

This level of work in this course is varied and challenging. Students will be expected to commit to significant time outside of class for performances, competition pieces, and rehearsals. This course focuses on the in depth nature of theatre, including but not limited to, script analysis, scansion (Shakespeare), directing, advanced acting/characterization skills, technical theatre, improvisation, and musical theatre. Grades and conduct from previous theatre courses and a formal audition will determine acceptance into this course.

Musical Theatre class is an exploration of American Musical Theatre. Students will study the work of the actor/singer/dancer and use their gained knowledge to develop as performers. Students will prepare and present as soloists as well as members of small groups and larger ensembles. Since this is a workshop course, students will prepare material for class presentation and critique. There will also be a focus on the audition process as well as musical theatre history and repertoire. Finally, the class will participate in a culminating showcase performance at the end of the year

Students will identify the roles and responsibilities of producer, stage manager, and publicist. It is not an acting class. Students who take this course will have a variety of extracurricular and rehearsal opportunities available to them.
